Mechanical Engineer
The mechanical engineers at the Brunel Solar Team design, manufacture, and test all the mechanical components of the solar car. This includes everything from the wheels to the body of the car: the suspension, the steering system, and the braking system. The mechanical engineers are also responsible for the mechanical system that adjusts the solar panel to the correct angle, as well as the system that opens and closes the canopy, ensuring that the driver can enter and exit the car smoothly.
Throughout the year, there is a good balance between computer-based design and hands-on work in the workshop. The mechanics use the 3D design program CATIA and FEM software ANSYS. They quickly learn to work with these tools and turn their own designs into production drawings. They also engage with various companies in different production processes to have their components made from the right materials. As the race in Australia approaches, they ensure that Nuna is in top condition. Do the brakes spin freely? Is the steering properly aligned?
